Dear Whanau

I welcome you and your child to Ruma Whitu for 2013.

A bit about me -
I have been a teacher for the last 17 years and have taught in various schools in Christchurch, Taranaki and in London.  I live in town and I am passionate about sport - golf, triathlon, league and the Highlanders being my main interests. I love teaching at Burnham and look forward to having a busy and productive year with your child.

Our inquiry for this term is IT”S ALL ABOUT ME - which reflects investigating the multiple intelligences and how we learn best.  We will be experimenting with a lot of different learning styles and developing our skills in a number of areas.

This term is an awesome one for us with alot of events going on.
·   Swimming is happening in Weeks 2 – 4 finishing with our school swimming sports.
·   Math is Addition and Subtraction and Measurement
·   Writing is Recounts and Instructions  - we will be writing our autobiography and demonstrating a “how to”.
·   Reading is vocabulary and retelling / sequencing
·   PAT and STAR testing is happening along with running records and other testing to find your child’s needs in order to provide the best learning programme.
  • Children who are 9 yrs will have the opportunity to take part in the Lincoln Zones Triathlon either as an individual participant or in a teamLet me know if that is something that you think your child would be interested in.

Please make sure that your child’s hat and vest is at school everyday.

All Year 4 and 5 children will be on camp at Blue Skies in Kaiapoi on 26-28 March.  This will be a fantastic opportunity for the class to strengthen their co-operation and partnership skills, challenge their boundaries and learn about the environment.  More information including cost, gear list and medical forms will be sent in the next week, please email me with any questions after these have been received. Parent support is essential in order for our school camps to take place.  I will need to have confirmed three parents from Ruma Whitu who can commit to coming to camp and enough transport for the trip to and from Blue Skies by the end of February.

Homework is part of our weekly study.  Your child has a clearfile and notebook that they will use for this work.
Basic facts, spelling and their choice of 10-15mins of nightly reading are the basic expectations.  There will be other work sent home as it arises.
